Six Steps to a Pest Free Garden

Jessica Walliser, author, horticulturalist, bug-lover, will speak about her approach to pest free gardening.

Six Steps to a Pest Free Garden

In this lecture Jessica outlines an easy to follow six step pest control plan. Using techniques based on both Integrated Pest Management and natural-care gardening, this plan enables gardeners to manage any pest troubles safely, effectively, and organically. Information about biological, botanical, physical, and mechanical controls is offered; and there’s plenty of practical and useful advice for boosting a plant’s natural immune system.
She is author of the Amazon best-seller Good Bug, Bad Bug: Who’s Who, What They Do, and How to Manage Them Organically and blogs weekly for both SavvyGardening.com and HobbyFarms.com. Her fourth book, Attracting Beneficial Bugs to the Garden: A Natural Approach to Pest Control, was released by Timber Press in January of 2014 and was named one of the Top 12 Gardening Books by Martha Stewart Living magazine in March of 2015. It was also awarded the American Horticultural Society’s Book Award.
As owner of Ironweed Apparel, Jessica is working to unite fashion and gardening at long last by providing gardeners with hip, funky urban farming and gardening tee shirts that let you grow in style.
Jessica lives and gardens northwest of Pittsburgh with her husband and son, six chickens, two cats, two hermit crabs, and billions and billions of very good bugs.

Get the Bugs Out of Your Business

Through lecture and breakout sessions Mary Allen will demonstrate proven techniques for increasing your success rate in 3 vital areas.

In this workshop, Mary will take you over three hurdles business owner can face. She will give you tools for improving your sales efforts, business planning strategies for the long term, and ways to create better business outcomes through your relationships with customers and employees.
Participants will walk away with a simple and manageable business plan ready to be immediately implemented. Ideas will be shared for improving your company’s story to ensure you are keeping a full pipeline of business opportunities. Simple and practical tools will be introduced to establish and manage targets to ensure you are achieving your financial goals one business quarter at a time. And you will walk away with practical tips for managing the human element while protecting your revenues and your profitability. Please bring your sales materials your website where your readers can get further details.

2014 SPONSOR MEET and GREET event with HOUZZ

APLD NJ
March 30, 2014

2014 SPONSOR MEET and GREET

event with HOUZZ

To all APLD NJ Chapter Members and their Guests,

Our 4th annual “Sponsor Meet and Greet” event will be held on Tuesday evening, April 8th.  In order to show our appreciation to our sponsors for their support in 2013 we wanted to change things up a bit - for their benefit!

We have arranged for a 30 to 45 minute presentation from a representative from HOUZZ.

Some of you may have heard of HOUZZ – for those that haven’t just click on the blue link and take a peek! Our feeling is that this presentation will be beneficial to everybody in the audience.  Most of the sponsors were called (some we couldn’t contact). We received favorable feedback on this idea from just about everyone we spoke with. So we hope you are as excited about this evening as we are!

We still plan on having our “social hour” where our members will have time to mingle with all of the sponsors at their designated tables. We will be providing light snacks along with wine, beer, soda and water. Instead of having each of the sponsors do a short speech about their product we will formally introduce all of them. We will also look forward to welcoming our new sponsors of 2014.

Another item – we will  be inviting contractors among other guests. There are many of our members who are design only and look to hook up with a good installer. Our hope is that these contractors/installers might also become our sponsors new clients! A posssible win-win situation.

This year’s event will be held in the Parish Hall at Christ Church

in Short Hills – the same place as last year. The actual street address is 66 Highland Avenue. The hours will be from 6pm to 9pm. Hopefully everyone will be attending again this year. We have already started making arrangements for this event and need to know ASAP whether or not you are planning to attend.  The planning for this event involved a change in dates so we are already a little behind in getting this announcement out. For that reason we eagerly look forward to your reply.

Thank you once again.

THE SELF PERPETUATING GARDEN

a lecture with Larry Weaner

Nature has spent millennia perfecting plants’ abilities to reproduce and proliferate on their own, and yet we often go to great effort and expense placing every plant in our designed landscapes. How can we capitalize on plants’ reproductive abilities, and actively encourage planted as well as existing and new species to colonize our landscapes? In this lecture, well-known designer Larry Weaner will discuss principles and protocols for creating dynamic, ecologically rich landscapes where nature does much of the “planting.” The lecture will include detailed case studies that demonstrate how practical, concrete strategies of assisted plant proliferation can be applied at diverse scales, from the most intimate garden to large multi-acre landscapes.

About Larry Weaner -

LARRY WEANER has been creating native landscapes throughout the eastern United States since 1977. His firm Larry Weaner Landscape Associates has a national reputation for combining ecological restoration with the traditions of fine garden design. The firm has received the top three design awards from the Association of Professional Landscape Designers, and the firm’s landscapes and gardens have been toured by numerous organizations, including The Garden Conservancy, The Cultural Landscape Foundation, and the American Horticultural Society. Larry is an active guest lecturer and instructor for horticultural and environmental organizations throughout the United States. In 1990, he founded New Directions in the American Landscape, a conference series with a national following.

The Pleasures and Perils of Historic Landscape Preservation

Historic gardens present unique challenges for the designer. This lecture will present a brief overview of American garden styles, discuss the standards for evaluating and restoring period gardens and discuss sources for research, appropriate plants and project help. We will work through a case study using an early 20th century garden at Fosterfields, a county owned property in Morristown, NJ.

SPACE -Not Just the Final Frontier

Space is consistently one of the most difficult concepts for Landscape Designers to grasp. Although relatively easy to understand when thinking about interior spaces of a building, it suddenly becomes a challenge when faced with an open expanse in the landscape. This presentation is a fun and reflective look at creating spaces in the outdoor environment and how a properly sequenced and proportioned spatial experience can create a wonderful visitor experience.
